On18 Trestle – Pt VIII

Finished Railings
trestle2I’ve finished attaching the railings and I’m pretty much happy with the results. Next .. I have to complete the deck by constructing the water barrel platform.

Positioning the trestle deck

Positioning the trestle deck

I glued a piece of 1/4″ sq. dowel to the abutment seats. This allowed the trestle to sit at the correct height – and provides a place for the mounting screws to screw into. Here, the trestle is in place so I can start getting the bents in the correct position.

I used a #4 screw at either end of the deck to attach to the 1/4″ sq. dowels which are glued to the abutment seats. This means that I can (carefully) attach the bents to the trestle deck with them ‘resting firmly’ on footings – this will allow the complete trestle to be removed to work on the area behind and below it.

A quick snap using my iPhone looking down the length of the trestle. Looking pretty good I think even at this relatively early stage in the ‘scenery department’.

Next up … putting in the bents.

  1. Hi…Am wondering if you can help me out with making a barrel platform on my train layout…don’t recall from when I was a kid, what the platform deck looked like or if there even was one. You’re doing a super job in your layout, by the way. Is it possible for you to send some pics showing what you did with the decking? Look forward to hearing from you at your convenience.
