Old Gin Works – Pt II

Brick Sheeting ..
I’m going to use Rusty Stumps O Scale Common Brick Sheet – both regular and Lightly Aged. This is Laser Cut into .016″ RC Board. I’m just going to ‘muse’ a bit about how I’m going to go about this.
Single Cut/Bend
Single cut through mortar line

Single cut through mortar line

You can’t just cut/bend on a mortar line and have the wall look right. Ok. Let’s do that .. cut vertically along a mortal line and see what we get.

Here, I’m using a gray plane to indicate where the cut is.

SC2So. I split the wall at a vertical mortar joint. So far .. so good. You can also imagine that I am folding the brick sheet instead of cutting it. Same – same.
Chamfer the edges

Chamfer the edges

Next .. chamfer the inside edges where the sheet will go around the corner. Now – if I folded it instead of cutting it, there would have to be a grove cut on the back to make a fold work. Here the chamfer should be 45°. If greater than that there would be a gap left on the inner side .. if greater there would be a problem with that back edge hitting. This isn’t much of course .. the sheet is only .016″ thick so it would be pretty easy to do.

SC4Let’s imagine that I rotate the walls so they are at 90°. The idea is that I would glue this brick sheet to an underlying substructure.
The corner is wrong - darn it.

The corner is wrong – darn it.

Finally slide the walls together and you can see the problem. What we get are ‘square’ bricks – One is the length and width of the long side of a brick .. the other one has a length and width equal to the width of the short side of the brick. So. This won’t work. So we will have to do something else.

Double Cut
Double Cut

Double Cut

In order to get the corner correct we will have to make a double-cut.

DC2Here, I’ve cut the sheet and tossed out the bit from the center.
Chamfer the edges

Chamfer the edges

.. again. The edges are chamfered.

DC4.. and turn the walls so they are at 90°
Correct corner

Correct corner

.. and .. “hey hey” .. now the corners are correct.
